How Solar Works

How Does a Grid-Tied Residential Solar Photovoltaic System Work?

Solar Panels
In Southern California, solar panels are frequently installed on residential roofs. These panels are made from photovoltaic cells (to convert sunlight into direct current (DC)) and a sealed frame. A well designed solar panel can last for 40 plus years.

Inverter(s)
The DC power from solar panels is converted to alternating current (AC) by an inverter. AC power is the standard electrical current used in your home. There are two types of inverters: Traditional and Micro. Micro inverters are well suited to homes with shading issues.

Utility Meter
The utility meter incessantly measures your electrical consumption or excess production. When the sun is shining your solar system may produce more power than you need, and you will accumulate credits with the utility company that roll over to your next bill.

Utility Grid
The utility supplies your home with electricity at night and whenever you need it. You supply the utility grid with power whenever you have excess electricity production.
